A Talk on FGM

Maryann Mohamoud and Kate Kendel made a video discussing the struggles they face as survivors of female genital mutilation (FGM). They also discuss reasons why FGM still occurs and ways to stop the inhumane practice in Africa and throughout the world. You can watch the video in parts on YouTube.

Maryann Mohamoud is the founder of Breaking the Silence, a Springfield-based program housed in The Springfield Institute. Her program works with survivors of FGM and other issues that affect the immigrant community of Springfield and Western Massachusetts. Kate Kendel works with the Foreningen Project Mountain-Top For Women Progress in Denmark. In 2006, she received the Human Rights Award from Amnesty International and Salaam DK for the film “The Secret Pain,” in which she was the film’s producer, central character, and project consultant.
