We need your help immediately.
As you may have heard, the Senate Ways and Means budget was released yesterday and it includes a 46% cut (from $11 million to $6 million) to the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation’s (MLAC) line item.
This funding supports free legal assistance for low income people to maintain their housing, protect battered women and children, assist the elderly and provide cash and food assistance to the disabled. Senator Cynthia Creem will be filing an amendment to restore the line item (0321-1600) to the $11 million level.
If you haven’t already done so, please call your Senator today and urge him/her to sign onto the Creem amendment relative to budget line item 0321-1600. Timing is of the essence as amendments are due by 5:00 p.m. tomorrow (May 15). Having many Senators supporting the Creem amendment will give it a much better likelihood of passage when the full Senate takes it up next week.

Thank you for your continued dedication to the cause of equal justice during these most difficult times.
