I first thought Spanish American Union (aka La Casa Hispana) was getting a mention in yesterday’s Globe (article here), because I had heard Rob Bailey say something similar about his organization. But SAU’s claim is “the oldest Latino community organization in Western Massachusetts” (established in 1968). The League of United Latin American Citizens (established in 1929, and based in Texas) is hosting a national conference in Boston this weekend. The theme is “Latinas,” which draws on the group’s core issue: “equal treatment.” According to the article, three factors influenced the decision to come to Boston:
- The Latino population in MA has increased by 83% since 1990
- Increased outreach to immigrants from Central America and Dominican Republic
- Greater emphasis on activism
Anyone from Springfield going?
