Employees of grassroots organizations are paid poorly, under-insured, and under-benefited. But help might be on the way. “For the Benefit of Our Workers: The Massachusetts Nonprofit Employee Benefit Study (59 pages, PDF),” a new report from The Boston Foundation, Braver PC (a financial services firm), and the Mass Nonprofit Network, examines compensation, health coverage, and benefits for nonprofits all over the state (i.e., 14% of the workforce). The data, which is based on a sample of 649 nonprofits, is sliced by region, size of org, program focus, etc. And in response to the disheartening–but not surprising–news about grassroots nonprofits, a task force has been convened to consider legislative and regulatory changes that would provide better options for nonprofits and their employees.
