Nonprofits and businesses: Who teaches who?

picture-14How many Wall Street scandals will it take to debunk the popular notion that all nonprofits need is a little business acumen and the kind of accountability that automatically comes with a fixation on a bottom line? I’ve actually noticed the opposite: Nonprofits teaching businesses a thing or two about social and environmental sustainability (and how these ideas even make good business sense). In the Financial Times (Jan 13, 2009), Phil Buchanan (a Harvard Business School alum who runs the Boston-based Center for Effective Philanthropy) takes a rare stand in defense of the unique contributions that the nonprofit sector makes to society.
