“A New Path of Opportunity for Young Americans” (Demos 2/27/09)

Young Americans are coming to terms with the fact that they may not ever achieve the level of financial stability their parents enjoy. In May 2008, Tamara Draut from the NY-based think tank, Demos, presented a set of policy recommendations that could help reinvent the social contract and restore opportunity, including:

  • Green Collar Jobs
  • Career Ladders in Health and Education
  • Facilitate Worker’s Rights to Unionize (Employee Free Choice Act)
  • Regulate Private Student Loans
  • Address Abusive and Deceptive Credit Card Practices
  • Make Homeownership More Secure
  • Establish Universal, Voluntary, Early Learning and Care

Someone was listening. In response to several encouraging initiatives in President Obama’s budget plan, Tamara reports back last week that “today’s generation of young people have a real shot at the middle class.”
